First, identify the door
There are three common routes. Automatic consideration uses information from your admission application. A separate scholarship application requires another form or portal. A competitive program may combine either route with essays, nominations, or interviews. Automatic consideration does not mean an automatic award.
Start on the official scholarship page before logging in. Check that the instructions are for incoming first-year students and your entering year. Continuing-student and transfer applications may have similar names but different deadlines.
A portal workflow you can reuse
- Apply to the college and activate the account it sends you. Allow time for login credentials to arrive.
- Open the scholarship link from the official university page or applicant portal. Use the university-issued account when required.
- Complete the general application, then any freshman, college, department, or individual-award supplements that apply to you. One submitted form may not complete all opportunities.
- Submit the required financial-aid form if the award considers need. Respond to document requests using the school's secure process.
- Save the confirmation and check the portal status. “Recommended,” “matched,” or “eligible” is not necessarily “submitted” or “awarded.”
- Keep checking email and the portal for invitations, missing documents, interviews, and acceptance instructions.
UT Austin and LASSO
After applying, activate your UT EID and MyStatus. Follow the Scholarship Interest Form route for prospective freshmen. UT's scholarship system is called Longhorn Awards and Student Scholarship Opportunities, or LASSO. Check additional college or departmental opportunities and their instructions. The Texas Exes scholarship process has its own information too; do not assume every UT-related award shares one deadline. [20]

Texas State and BOSS
Texas State directs students to apply for admission, then submit the Freshman Scholarship Application through the Bobcat Online Scholarship System, or BOSS, for its competitive freshman scholarship category. That category includes Terry. Its published application page lists December 15 before the first summer/fall semester; confirm the deadline for your entering year and complete all required sections. Other freshman merit awards can use different consideration rules. [21]
Open the Texas State scholarship application instructions, then follow the BOSS link. Do not wait until you have committed to Texas State to investigate scholarships.
UT Arlington and Mav ScholarShop
UTA's Terry instructions identify Mav ScholarShop as the application system. Use the official Terry page to review eligibility, required documents, and the current deadline. Once you have the required UTA account access, complete the relevant application and verify its status. Browse other applicable opportunities separately; receiving a recommendation in a portal is not the same as receiving money. [22]

Texas A&M freshman scholarships
For incoming fall freshmen, A&M uses the admission and scholarship portions of Common App or ApplyTexas. Provide the requested consent for scholarship consideration before submission; the official page says a submitted application cannot be revised. Complete the additional leadership essay for Terry consideration and required academic-record materials. The current freshman scholarship deadline is December 1, subject to its published weekend rule. Check your Applicant Information System for admission materials. [23]

TCU Chancellor's Scholarship
This is a competitive merit award covering full tuition for eight semesters for first-year students. It is not automatically full cost of attendance. For fall 2027, TCU lists November 1 for the admission application and November 15 for the John V. Roach Honors College application, completed through the TCU portal. Both are required for first-year Chancellor's consideration. [16]
Finalists receive an invitation and must complete the next registration and interview steps. TCU currently states that test scores are not considered in Chancellor's review. Academic preparation, writing, references, and involvement still matter. Early Action is one listed route; you do not need to assume a binding Early Decision application is required. Verify the terms of any application plan you select. [16]

Forty Acres at UT Austin
Texas Exes administers Forty Acres, a full-ride merit program. Eligible students are considered through their UT Austin application. Students may also indicate interest using the Scholarship Interest Form in MyStatus and complete the requested expanded résumé and essay. The current page lists January 15 for those interest-form materials. Selected applicants receive additional steps directly. [14][15]
For fall 2027, the published UT application dates are October 15, 2026 for early action and December 1, 2026 for the final application deadline. Eligibility includes U.S. citizenship or permanent residency; other requirements apply. Read the official process rather than waiting for someone to tell you that you have been nominated. [15]

Terry Foundation Scholarship
Terry combines financial need, academic strength, and leadership. The Traditional Scholarship is a last-dollar award at participating Texas public universities, with citizenship or permanent residency, Texas residency, immediate post-high-school enrollment, and other eligibility requirements. Applicants use the affiliated university's process, not a single application sent directly to the Foundation. [13]
The university reviews applications and nominates candidates. A nomination is not an award offer. The Foundation says a student can be nominated by multiple universities but can participate in only one Terry interview; if that happens, it asks the student to choose a university for the interview. Read Terry's eligibility and campus application links and its nomination and interview guidance. Prepare honest financial information and specific examples of responsibility, service, and leadership.
Need-based national opportunities
QuestBridge National College Match is a college admission and scholarship process for high-achieving students from low-income backgrounds. Learn about it before senior year, including College Prep Scholars for juniors. A Match is generally binding, with MIT currently the exception, and ranking affects other early applications. Review all partner requirements. [17]
The Gates Scholarship is a last-dollar program. Its current eligibility includes senior status, Pell eligibility, citizenship or permanent residency, and a minimum weighted GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent, plus enrollment requirements. Check the full official criteria; do not rely on older summaries. [18]
Local and smaller scholarships belong in your plan too
Ask your counselor about community foundations, employers, civic organizations, and scholarships tied to your school or county. Verify the sponsor and eligibility on the official application. Search platforms can help you discover awards, but a long list is only useful when you know which ones fit.
Prioritize awards by eligibility, deadline, value, and the work required. Do not assume an unknown applicant count means easy money. Save reusable experience notes, then answer each prompt directly. Check department and campus scholarships even after your first year; some require another application annually.
You received an offer. Now what?
“Redeeming” a scholarship usually means completing the award's acceptance and payment process. It is not usually a code you enter at checkout.
- Read the written offer. Confirm the university, amount per year, covered costs, duration, and acceptance deadline.
- Follow its acceptance instructions. The scholarship may require a portal action, signed agreement, or reply. Scholarship acceptance and college enrollment can be separate steps.
- Complete requested enrollment, aid verification, housing, or program requirements. Ask the scholarship office about any condition you cannot meet.
- Report outside scholarships to your financial-aid office. Ask the donor how funds are sent and whether it needs enrollment verification or your student ID. UT, for example, publishes donor payment instructions. [20]
- Check the student account when funds are scheduled to post. If an expected award is missing, contact the aid or scholarship office before the bill is due. Ask about payment timing rather than assuming the offer letter already paid the bill.
- Save the renewal rules and calendar the next application or GPA review. Report relevant changes to the office that manages the award.
These are general steps; the award letter and your university's instructions control the actual process. Ask whether another scholarship will reduce an existing award and whether any remaining credit balance is refundable under the school's rules.
